The sacrament of baptism is the beginning of our Christian faith journey, where we become a ‘Child of God’ and a friend and follower of Jesus Christ. We have a share in his life and we join his family – the Church.

St Mary’s Erskineville celebrates the Rite of Baptism during Mass every Sunday at 11 am, except second Sunday of the month (outside of Lent, Advent and Christmas).

Preparation for baptism includes:

Commitment and welcome ceremony to include parents, child and Godparents, where possible, at any of the Sunday Liturgies two weeks prior to the baptism.

Preparation and formation for parents and where possible, Godparents (1-1.5 hours) time and day to be negotiated with the Sacramental Coordinator or Parish Priest.

Godparents at least one Godparent MUST be a practising Catholic who has received all sacraments of initiation – Baptism, Eucharist & Confirmation. The other Godparent must be of a Christian domination not non-denominational. Non Christian Godparents are witnesses and their names will not appear on the Baptism Certificate.

The Rite of Baptism conferred on the every Sunday except on the Second Sunday of the month.
